Feminine Deities in Classic Literature
A Transformative 8-Week Journey exploring the feminine divine.
What is the Female God? How is she depicted in classic literature and what kind of healing can she provide in an otherwise patristic culture? This writing seminar examines these questions and more in pursuit of fully understanding a God that has been historically denied. Beginning in ancient myths and biblical literature, moving up through 20th century America, and landing in our modern world, this class will explore feminine deities. How does God as mother differ from God as father? How are these notions affected by differences in culture? What insights can we draw through this work about ourselves and the never-ending pursuit of truth? Readings will include classical mythology, the Bible, Toni Morrison, Virginia Woolf, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, among many others.
“The readings were perfectly curated".”

Hi! My name is Brenda Ray and I’m a creative nonfiction author with over a decade experience teaching. I first taught this course at the New School University in the fall of 2018 and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I can’t wait for all of you to join me as we discuss our inherent power as human beings and find ways of reconnecting with our ever present, ever powerful, eternal source. It is through literature we find ourselves again and again from sisters of the past, present, and one day future. I can’t wait to see what we come to learn about ourselves and the ways we will forever find light in the darkness.
